Continental plates colliding can cause mountains such as these. Californias major geological features are mountains, faults and volcanoes. Famous mountains are Mammoth mountain, Mount Whitney and Mount shasta which is also a volcano. (click image)
Pacific Ring of Fire
The Pacific ring of fire shows active earthquakes and volcanoes that circle the pacific ocean.(click image)
California's major geological features.
California's geological features are mountains, faults and volcanoes.
Convergent and divergent plates
This image shows plates converging and diverging plates. These can make volcanoes, rift-valleys, mountains, mid-ocean ridges and trenches.(click image)

This is what could happen when two plates crash into each other. (click image)
The plate tectonics spot
This blog has many interesting pictures and facts all about plate tectonics.
The Californian volcanoes are Glass mountain, the Medicine lake volcano, Mount Shasta, Mount Lassen and Clear lake.
Plates Around the World
Did you know that plates move almost a cm a year? The plates move by the convection currents in the earth. These cause the plates to move into different directions causing mountains, mid-ocean ridges, rift-valleys and volcanoes. This shows evidence of plate tectonics. If the plates pass by each other it causes earthquakes. (click image)
How volcano's are made
Volcano's are formed from two plates colliding into each other. As the two plates meet, the continents are being crunched up and forming mountain's. The way that the volcano's are made is when magma from the mantle rises up through the holes in the mountains that are being made.
Pangea
Pangea the super continent, was one large continent where all seven continents were mused together.
Scientists figured this out when the same fossils were found on different continents. This wouldn't be
possible if the continents were not mused together. (click image)
Mid-ocean ridge
Mid-ocean ridges are constantly forming new land from magma rising up form the mantle(click image)
Earths Layers
This is a picture of what scientists think looks like inside earth. The layers are the crust, upper mantle, lower mantle, outer mantle and inner core. (click image)
Californias major faults.
There is the coast range and Melones fault in northern California. The western faults are Owens valley, Panamint valley, and the Death valley fault. California's western faults are the San Andreas, Hayward Fit, Calaveras and Rincoda. The southern faults are San Gabriel, Elsinore, Pinto Mtn and Garlock.
